For sale we have a valuable and culturally significant set, especially for collectors of 19th-century British art and satire. 

John Leech (1817-1864) was one of the most prominent British illustrators and caricaturists of the 19th century. He was best known for his work with Punch magazine, where his satirical and humorous illustrations captured the social and political life of Victorian England. His work  is characterised by its sharp wit and attention to detail, particularly in his depictions of English country life, hunting scenes, and the eccentricities of British society. His style is lively and expressive, often using humour to comment on social norms and behaviours.

Leech produced many illustrations related to hunting, a popular and significant pastime among the British gentry during the 19th century. His hunting prints often combined humour with a keen observation of the characters and situations found in the hunting field.

Socially these prints are entertaining but they  also provide insight into the class distinctions and social dynamics of the time, particularly through the character of Mr. Jorrocks, one of Leech’s most famous creations, who is a humorous, fictional grocer with a passion for hunting.

Condition:  Overall good with bright colours.  The frames are loose and aged - one has a break in the upper corner.
