Your Vintage China Deserves to Be Treasured — and Protected

There is something quietly magical about holding a vintage teacup. The delicate translucency of fine bone china, the hand-painted florals, the gilded rim worn soft by decades of afternoon teas — each piece carries a story. Whether you have just welcomed your first vintage find into your home or you are a seasoned collector with a cabinet full of Shelley, Tuscan, and Aynsley, knowing how to care for your china properly is what keeps those stories alive.

Here is our guide to keeping your vintage bone china as beautiful as the day it was made.

1. Always Hand-Wash — Never the Dishwasher

This is the golden rule of vintage china care. Dishwashers are far too harsh for antique and vintage pieces. The high heat, aggressive detergents, and water pressure can cause gilding to fade, glaze to craze, and delicate hand-painted decoration to lift or dull over time.

Instead, wash each piece individually in warm (not hot) water with a small amount of mild washing-up liquid. Use a soft cloth or sponge — never an abrasive pad — and rinse thoroughly. Dry immediately with a soft, lint-free cloth to prevent water spots and mineral deposits.

Tip: If your china has gold or platinum gilding, avoid any detergent containing lemon or citrus, as the acidity can strip the lustre.

2. Handle With Care — Literally

Always pick up cups and bowls from the base rather than the handle. Vintage handles, however charming, can be fragile — particularly on pieces that are 80 or 100 years old. When carrying multiple pieces, resist the temptation to stack cups inside one another without protection, as this can cause scratching and stress fractures.

If you are displaying your china, ensure shelves are stable and pieces are not crowded together where they might knock and chip.

3. Store Thoughtfully

Proper storage is just as important as careful washing. When stacking plates or saucers, place a soft cloth, felt pad, or piece of acid-free tissue paper between each one to prevent scratching. For cups, avoid stacking them at all — instead, store them upright or hang them on cup hooks if you have a dresser or display cabinet.

Keep your china away from direct sunlight, which can fade hand-painted decoration and cause colours to shift over time. A cool, dry environment is ideal — avoid storing pieces in damp outbuildings or near radiators.

4. Dealing With Stains and Discolouration

Tea and coffee stains are common on vintage china, and they can often be gently lifted without harsh chemicals. Try soaking the piece in a solution of warm water and a small amount of white vinegar, or make a gentle paste of bicarbonate of soda and water and apply it with a soft cloth. Rinse thoroughly afterwards.

For more stubborn staining or crazing (the fine network of cracks in the glaze), it is worth consulting a specialist conservator rather than attempting aggressive cleaning at home.

5. Know When to Display and When to Use

One of the great joys of vintage china is actually using it — there is nothing quite like afternoon tea served in a beautiful vintage tea set. However, some pieces are better suited to display than daily use, particularly those with significant gilding, hairline cracks, or restoration work.

As a general guide: if a piece is in excellent, unrestored condition with minimal wear to the gilding, it can be used with care for special occasions. If it shows signs of repair or heavy crazing, it is best enjoyed as a display piece.

6. Insure and Document Your Collection

If you are building a serious collection, it is worth photographing each piece and keeping a record of its maker, pattern name, approximate date, and any known provenance. This is invaluable both for insurance purposes and for the pleasure of knowing your collection's history.

A Final Word on Provenance

Every piece of vintage china we offer at the Vintage Teacup Company has been carefully sourced and selected for its quality, character, and condition. We believe that the best vintage china is not locked away — it is lived with, used, and loved. With the right care, your pieces will bring joy not just to you, but to the generations who come after you.
